Thanks to support from two local businesses – world-leading parachute manufacturer IvinGQ and Stitch Bridgend Sewing School – Aberkenfig Library’s adult crafting workshops are ‘thready’ for a new term of classes starting in January.
The monthly sessions, hosted by Awen Cultural Trust’s creatively talented library staff, have proved a real success this year, with almost 150 requests to attend from locals and library members looking to get niftier with their needlework.
As well as supporting adults to learn new skills to make a range of Christmas items, from stockings to book cushions, bunting and wreaths, the sessions are forging friendships between people with similar interests and helping to combat social isolation.
Claire Hayes, the Aberkenfig Library Assistant who is leading this initiative, said:
“It has been wonderful to see our new sewers developing a passion for crafting. They are always so pleased to take away something they have made, which they would never have attempted to make before. The workshops have also been beneficial for mental health support – encouraging some of our sewers to attend new places, take on new challenges and meet new people.”
One of the regular attendees, Laura, added:
“I’ve loved the sewing classes in Aberkenfig. I suffer from anxiety, but now the library is one of my safe places to go. I’m learning so much and I can’t wait for the next session. My confidence has really grown.”
Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust, said:
“As a charity, we depend on the support and goodwill of local businesses and organisations. I was delighted to learn that IrvinGQ in Llangeinor has kindly offered staff to fix a number of sewing machines, and Stitch Sewing School in Bridgend has provided us with materials and sewing suggestions, all of which is gratefully received. As the success of this initiative continues to demonstrate, libraries are so much more than books and reading – they really are the gateway to lifelong learning and the many positive benefits to health and wellbeing this can bring.”
