The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to set themselves a reading challenge to help prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. This can happen if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.

Each year the Challenge, delivered with the support of public libraries, motivates over 700,000 children to keep reading to build their skills and confidence.

Over 2500 children in the county of Bridgend signed up to the Challenge in 2019. In 2021 we were coming back from the Covid-19 pandemic and over 1500 children signed up to the challenge, which was incredible with all the restrictions that were still in place. Let us make 2022 our best year yet by encouraging all children to sign up to this year’s Challenge.

This year, The Reading Agency is partnering with Science Museum Group for Gadgeteers, a science and innovation themed Challenge that will spark children’s curiosity about the world around them.

Through taking part in the Challenge children will be able to join six fictional ‘Gadgeteers.’ The characters – brought to life by children’s writer and illustrator Julian Beresford – use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests from fashion and technology to cooking and music.

Read books and get rewards from your local Awen Library, which include stickers, magnets, and other secret gadget goodies. Our libraries will also be having events and special guests to keep the children busy over the holidays inspired by this year’s theme.

The Challenge will launch in our libraries on Saturday 9th July and run until mid-September.
